One of the requirements for graduation in AU’s MA program is competency in an alternative tool of research, such as a language, statistics, or oral history. For digital history, competency involved taking the course (HIST 677 History in the Digital Age, Summer 2009) and submitting a portfolio of work. The full requirements can be found on the history department’s website, here. The following pieces comprise my portfolio:

Presently Historical
I count this website, my first “real” website, as a major part of my portfolio. As my personal homepage and blog, it will constantly evolve with me, giving an idea of what I have done and what I can do.

Old City, New Pictures
This was my final project for HIST 677. Using Omeka software, designed by the Center for History and New Media at George Mason University for digital museum collections, I created a space where users could interact with each other and with their surroundings. For now, this website only includes Washington, DC. For more information, you can see the accompanying Final Grant Proposal, which outlines both the history of the website, and where, had I the time and resources, I would have liked it to go.

Save Historic Arlington House, Inc. Website
My classmate and colleague, Melanie Parker, and I were asked to design a website for Save Historic Arlington House, Inc., the official friends group associated with Arlington House: The Robert E. Lee Memorial, in Arlington, VA. With board approval, we put this together. In addition to the website, we encouraged SHAH to embrace Web 2.0; we hope to integrate a Flickr stream, Twitter, a blog, and a Facebook page into this currently donation-driven website and watch a small group of local, dedicated supporters become a larger community.
